Caspian Plover – an exciting surprise

Caspian Plover – Ma'ale Gilboa fishponds

8th of August

It is morning time, so I went Birding.
I went to see one of the hotspots of the Valley, this hotspot is especially good during the Autumn Migration season, as the birds use this it as a layover where they can rest before they continue on their long journey.

The best part of my birding that morning took place when I got to an empty fish pond,
There I found a Caspian Plover what an exciting surprise – This species is very rare during the Autumn.

Usually we can see it during spring migration and in small amounts at the south of Israel.

The Caspian Plover is a rarity in the north of Israel.
I was lucky to see and document this spotting as it has been spotted only a few single times in the Beit Shean Valley during the past years.

But that was not all, No that was not all!
Here is a partial list of the birds this morning:

Little Bittern
Purple Heron
Black Stork
Collared Pratincole
Little-ringed Plover
Curlew Sandpiper
Temminck’s Stint
Little Stint
Wood Sandpiper
Marsh Sandpiper
Common Sandpiper
Greenshank
Ruff
Armenian Gull
Blue-cheeked Bee-eater
Roller
Black Headed Yellow wagtail
Clamorous Reed Warbler
Woodchat Shrike
