For the last few weeks during my wandering, I have been following the winter birds we have in the valley. Particularly notable are: the birds of prey found everywhere.
The Spotted Eagle is the most common bird of prey these days, their good numbers are seen in many places. in the valley, a normal day can be seen without a problem 5-8 individuals.
With them, you can enjoy another variety including Ospreys, Booted Eagles, Long-legged Buzzard, Black-winged Kite and more.

Thanks to Judith Suissa for the wonderful pictures.

This morning I went birding in the western fields of Kfar Ruppin. I was joined by Yoav Perlman of the Israel Ornithological Center. First up was a young Peregrine sat on the ground. Then a scan through a Skylark flock yielded a Calandra Lark. In a nearby field, hundreds of Meadow, Red-throated and Caucasian Water Pipits were flying in all directions. We also heard a Richard’s Pipit, and an Oriental Skylark that was also seen.
At the far end of the field, a muddy puddle attracted many pipits. The pipit-fest brought in a Bluethroat and two fantastic Siberian Buff-bellied Pipits.
Another highly enjoyable morning of birding.

Terek Sandpiper - Harod Valley

תמונה נוף וציפורים

On the 25th of September I went out birding, didn’t go far but stayed close to home. Harod Valley.

Just before sunset, the Harod Reservoir fills up with hundreds and even thousands of birds gathering to roost.

Among the species you can see – White Pelicans, Black Storks, different species of herons, ducks, birds of prey, waders, gulls and more.

sunset

At the last light, I spotted a bird I rarely get to see – a Terek Sandpiper.
The observation conditions weren’t favorable but I was certain of the identification.

I was hoping the bird would stick around until the following day.

In the morning, after putting my son in school, I went to look for the bird again.

When I arrived at the spot, I met two good friends Niv and Samuel, who were already watching the bird from the early morning.

After a few minutes of searching, I found the Terek Sandpiper as it fed along the water’s edge. It was relatively close so I managed to take a few record shots for documentation.

This bird is considered very rare inland away from the coast with 5-6 observations in the Valley in the past decade.

The bird remained in the valley for more than a week and was observed by many birders.

We invite you to join us and the birds in the Jordan Valley Birding Lodge

Caspian Plover – Ma'ale Gilboa fishponds

8th of August

It is morning time, so I went Birding.
I went to see one of the hotspots of the Valley, this hotspot is especially good during the Autumn Migration season, as the birds use this it as a layover where they can rest before they continue on their long journey.

The best part of my birding that morning took place when I got to an empty fish pond,
There I found a Caspian Plover what an exciting surprise – This species is very rare during the Autumn.

Usually we can see it during spring migration and in small amounts at the south of Israel.

The Caspian Plover is a rarity in the north of Israel.
I was lucky to see and document this spotting as it has been spotted only a few single times in the Beit Shean Valley during the past years.

But that was not all, No that was not all!
Here is a partial list of the birds this morning:

Little Bittern
Purple Heron
Black Stork
Collared Pratincole
Little-ringed Plover
Curlew Sandpiper
Temminck’s Stint
Little Stint
Wood Sandpiper
Marsh Sandpiper
Common Sandpiper
Greenshank
Ruff
Armenian Gull
Blue-cheeked Bee-eater
Roller
Black Headed Yellow wagtail
Clamorous Reed Warbler
Woodchat Shrike

Have a great August and come Join us and the birds in the Jordan Valley Birding Lodge and Center

Early Autumn - Beit She’an valley and the area

We can feel the beginning of the Autumn season, as the numbers of migrating
birds and on the rise.

01

At the fishponds we can see a variety of Herons such as Grey and Purple Herons
During the last week of July, we welcomed Garganeys and Eurasian Teals and
the White and Black Storks Already making their way south.

During this season the area is blessed with different kinds of Waders: Little-ringed Plover, Little Stint, Ruff Common, and Green Sandpiper

We enjoy the folks of Armenian Gulls, in between a few  Lesser Black-backed (Baltic) Gulls.

The Blue-cheeked Bee-eater is a common speck of color – migrating on the great rift valley, flocks stop here to rest, rejuvenate and hunt little bugs before they continue on their way south.

Around the fish ponds and the agriculture fields, we can witness Barn and Red-rumped Swallows as well as a small number of Yellow Wagtails

In the reedbeds, we can see and hear the Sedge and Savi’s Warblers as well as Great reed Warbler.

On the sides of the roads and the fields, we easily spot the Woodchat Shrikes.

DSCN2156 (Large)

The northern valleys are enjoying Such a variety of wonderful birds, one needs to come, in order to believe

May we all have a great Autumn season!

Summer birding

Summer Bird Watching in the Jordan Valley.

Summertime in Israel and especially in the valleys is hot, to say the least! In an area like the Jordan Valley where the temperature climbs to over 40 degrees, there is limited time for us to venture into a birding observation state.
However, that does not mean there aren’t any birds!
A couple hours of birdwatching early in the morning, can provide quite an epic birding experience.

"Makor Hahasida"

At Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin you will meet a unique nature experience.
